Spring Motorcycle Checklist
Get your bike ready for the season!
As the weather warms up and the riding season approaches, it’s time to shake off the dust and make sure your motorcycle is as ready for the road as you are. A thorough spring checkup can help prevent unexpected problems and keep your rides safe and enjoyable. Here’s a simple but essential checklist to follow before you hit the open road:
Registration, Driver’s Licence, and Insurance
- Make sure all documents are current and up to date.
Helmet and Eye Protection
- Inspect your helmet for cracks or damage.
- Manufacturers recommend replacing helmets that are over 10 years old.
- Check your visor, goggles, or glasses for scratches or swirls that could impair vision.
Riding Gear
- Leathers: Clean, oil, and ensure zippers, Velcro, and snaps are in good condition. Check pockets for essentials like your Bible, tire gauge, or cards.
- Fabric Gear: Clean, water-repellent spray applied, zippers and fasteners functional, and pockets packed with necessities.
- Gloves and Boots: Clean and waterproofed.
- Rain Gear: Check for tears, cracks, or wear.
- Try everything on — gear tends to “shrink” over the winter!
Check the Area Where Your Motorcycle Was Stored
- Look for signs of leaks (oil, brake fluid, antifreeze, gas) or any parts that may have fallen off while in storage.
Fluid Levels
- Inspect gas, engine oil, transmission oil, brake fluid (both master cylinders), differentials, and antifreeze.
- Run your fingers under the brake calipers to check for leaks.
- Check fork seals for oil leaks.
- Confirm fluid change intervals and service if due.
Levers, Pedals, and Cables
- Test for smooth operation and secure fit.
- Inspect brake and clutch cables for cracks or wear — replace if damaged.
- Ensure proper travel and adjustment of levers and pedals.
Brakes
- Check rotors for grooves (sign of pad wear).
- Inspect pad thickness.
- If brakes are squealing, it’s an early warning to replace pads.
Tires and Wheels
- Check tire pressure and inspect for wear, cracks, bulges, cuts, or other damage.
- Inspect rims or mags for cracks or chips.
- For spoke wheels, check for loose or bent spokes.
Chain or Belt Drive
- Check for correct tension (refer to your manual).
- Look for signs of wear, cracks, or damage.
- Lubricate chains as required.
Electrical System
- Test all lights and inspect exposed wiring.
- Check the horn and run switch operation.
- Test the kickstand shutoff switch, if your bike is equipped with one.
Emergency Essentials
- Make sure you have spare fuses, sunscreen, and a basic tool kit packed.
Control Familiarization
- Sit on your bike, look straight ahead, and practice reaching for all controls without looking to refresh muscle memory.
Doing a proper spring check isn’t just about maintenance—it’s about peace of mind. Spending a little time now to inspect your bike can save you headaches later and keep your rides safe and enjoyable all season long. If you’re ever unsure, reach out to your local mechanic or a seasoned rider in your group for a second opinion. Ride safe, and we’ll see you out on the road!
